• Henry Sekani

NAME ::: Henry Sekani        COUNTRY ::: Malawi

My name is Henry Sekani, I am the first born in a family of 5. I’m from Murandji in Malawi, the southern part of Malawi, near the Mozambique border. It’s a nice district with good condition of development. Most of the tourists like it. I am 24 years old. I am working as an assistant manager.

I grew up in a village, raised by my grandfather. My parents were around, but I didn’t stay with them. I was the first born. And here in Malawi, the first grandson is taken away to grow up with his grandparents. I was just visiting my parents on holidays. But only 2 weeks, then I went back home.

What is most important to you?

Education is most important in my life. I do believe that education is a key to success. For everybody to prosper in life you need education. If you have a good education, everything can come to you.

I have a certificate in Management. I was at the Malawi Institute of Management. But still more I am aiming high. I want to get a full degree in management. But due to financial crisis I’ve just stopped there. But I’ve decided that next year in June I shall go back to school.

What has influenced you the most in your life?

The first thing that influenced me was when I lost my mom. It was something that I didn’t expect. The situation was very tough to me. But I thank God that I survived it.  I was about 17 years old. She died of TB.  I lost my dad first, then my mom. And by the time my mom was also dead, I was surprised. I didn’t know how everything should go. I could only stay with my grandfather. Though I had always stayed with him, to loose my mom was a painful thing in my life. It affected my life in terms of education. She was the one who was paying my school fees. My grandfather was not working. Even up to now when  I’ve stopped education to start working. I wouldn’t have done that, had she still been alive. I would have gone on with my education to the point where I got a degree.

I was assisted by my aunt. She was the one who was supposed to be responsible for me.  She has to look after her family. We are five in number, and she has taken us home, which is a great responsible for her.

What has been an important turning point in your life?

The most important I think is that I’m working. And I’m assisting my brothers and sisters. And helping my brothers to go to school. That is a great thing in my life. I didn’t expect that I could ever reach the point that I could assist them, but now I thank God that I am able to do that.

    What makes you happy?

I always feel happy when I concentrate on God, worshipping him. That makes me feel   good, since I forget everything when I concentrate on God.

What are you personally proud of?

I’m proud of just staying around, because I’m working. And helping my sisters and brothers. I’m proud of that. Also that I have the certificate in my education. That also a thing to be proud of. My friends wish they could also have the opportunity to go to school and have a certificate in something. I can just say that I’m lucky to have acquired a technical education. I am proud of that.

What have been the biggest struggles in your life?

So far the biggest struggles in my life is to get the school fees to my young brothers. That’s the one thing that gives me a lot of headache.

What would you change in your life, if you could change something?

If I had been given the chance to change anything in my life I would go back to school. To get a diploma. To fulfill my great plans of getting my degree in management.

Also, the matter of friendship. Now I’m realizing that some of the friends that I have had, have had a positive influence on my future and what I am today, and have been bad company. They have had a disturbing influence. So the change that I could wish for is to go forward with my education. Not playing with ladies. And being busy seing friends outside. The time I’ve spent outside is a time I’m regretting.  I wasted a lot of time.

What do you wish for your own future?

If I could decide my future look so proud. I’m working, which means gathering resources.

I will be somebody! I will benefit a lot to my community. Even the country. Could know that there is somebody somewhere. You know here in Malawi we are facing a lot of problems. Some of them need somebody who can go for them with educations to eradicate those programs. I wish I could be one on them.

I could help my young brothers so they could get educations and also assist others.  By assisting others they will bring forward the community.  When somebody is well educated the way he can good things to the community is to construct things. I can even construct my own house. Once I have constructed that house, I could get access to electricity and bring that to the community.
