NAME ::: Engetranda Lugomo        COUNTRY ::: Tanzania

My name is Engetranda Lugomo. I’m 49 years old and I live in Kindimba Juu. I’m married and have six children, three of them are Albinos. I’m working as a farmer.

When I was young I was staying with my parents and my life was very nice. But when I got married my life got tougher, mainly because of financial reasons. After I gave birth to the last child, what happened with a surgery, I started having backpain a lot.

What is most important to you?

Most important to me is that we earn money, because then we are able to fullfill what we need, but without it is very hard.

What has influenced you the most in your life?

The biggest influence for me was my brother. He helped me with my first daughter. She stayed with him, he send her to school and allowed her to get an education. She did not finish school, but then he made it possible that she learned how to sew.

He also took the second boy, Flavian, and send him to a school, where they taught him how to build houses. So my brother helped us a lot and with that influenced me and my children a lot.

What has been an important turning point in your life?

There was one big change in my life and that was when I got married. Things got tough back then. So when I tried to get a better life, it was difficult. It is still my brother, who helped me a lot. He gave me money so that I could make bricks and sell them with iron sheets. But on my own I struggle a lot. The parents of my husband are really bad to me. they always accuse me and tell me bad things.

    What makes you happy?

Right now, what makes me happy, that are the goats we have. This will hopefully change our lives, when they produce enough milk, so that we can sell it. Maybe this will change things. That thought makes me happy.

I also feel happy when I see my children and when I see how they help me back home, that makes me happy.

What are you personally proud of?

I’m proud that I got six children, even when three of them are Albino children, what makes life for them and for me tougher. But it makes me proud that they are there and help me.

What have been the biggest struggles in your life?

The biggest difficulties are about my children as some of them are Albinos. My oldest daugther has problems with her legs, but right now I also struggle to treat her. Flavian has problems with the kidneys. I got some medicine at the hospital, but it still troubles him. So that is a big struggle.

What would you change in your life, if you could change something?

If I could find a way to earn money, that would help a lot. It would allow me to send all children to school, bring them to the hospital and give them what they need.

What do you wish for your own future?

If I would be capable in getting a good income my life would have been better. If I could choose, that would be something I wish for.

Money is really important. If I could get a secure house and the children could go to school, those are the two big wishes I have.
